ABOUT EXPIATION
DETAILS CUT
Expiation is a pan-fandom adventure game with science fiction, fantasy, and subtle horror elements that explore the concepts of crime versus innocence, definition of atonement, and reflection of self.
An overarching storyline will encourage characters to determine the truth about why they’ve been brought to this world and will be impacted by character discoveries and actions taken during the bimonthly events. Player-run events and plots are welcome during months where there is downtime.
Characters are mysteriously plucked from their world of origin, dropped into the white nothingness of disembodied voices, and told they’ll be treated as 'all of the others' have been. They awaken in this newer world largely pleasant to the eye in the close proximity of a populated town. In hand, they carry documentation and a tablet that accuses them of a crime, whether it be true or false, and they are instructed to simply wait until they face their sentencing.
Expiation is an environment meant to give characters the opportunity to analyze and reflect on their past actions in an effort to define and discover their own self-atonement. They may also perhaps seek forgiveness from others that they may have wronged, inadvertently or direct. It is not necessarily rehabilitation, but rather dissection of character motivation and evolution, based on individual dynamic and relationships with others.
Of course, not everything always goes as planned. The characters also have an opportunity to relish in and advocate for the chaos and destruction, making the world of the Expiation to be one that reflects their own sense of morality and image.
All characters in Expiation are being tested. Every single event, every single miniature event, just about every single thing that characters come up against is a test, including their interactions with the npcs. Every action matters.
SENTENCING
DETAILS CUT
We will leave a message on your character’s inbox with our NPC (link to expi account) to meet him at Courthouse for incarceration and to meet the council to get their punishments. If characters don’t go willingly, they will be brought by force by said NPC. Once there, he takes them into the court where they will meet The Council and receive their punishment. These punishments will be tailored to the crime committed or the crime characters have come into this world with. They will have until the Friday before the next event to complete these tasks, or it will result in punishment. Again, these will be tailored to the individual characters who have refused these crimes. While characters don’t remember seeing or talking to the council, they will remember their punishment as well as the reward for completing it: to change their crime to another on their “list of crimes”, or to be rewarded in another way. The other ways aren't specified, but they are:
- Regain a memory from a previous stay, or recover a memory from a memory-altering event
- Gain a small item, could be either theirs or someone else's
- Gain a small ability, or temporary supernatural ability (1 month)
Proof of compliance of the punishment must be threaded out and sent to the mods for characters to receive their reward. These threads don’t have to be complete, but there must be evidence that characters are working towards it in the thread(s) that are sent in. If real life comes up and you’re unable to make a thread, and it’s IC to finish it, please approach the mods and we will work with you on that on a case-by-case basis.
As always, this is opt-in. If there’s a player of a character that automatically is entered in the sentencing cycle via crimes in Aldrip that doesn’t wish to participate, please contact the mods and we will work with you on that as well.
Repetitive crime behavior will be handled on a case-by-case basis for other months. We would like for everyone interested in this mechanic to be able to participate, so there may be a month that an automatic character gets skipped if they commit a crime again. Ex: Vi completes her sentence in October, but if there are more crimes committed between now and the December cycle, she will only be added in if there’s a slot to be filled. That is to say, if there isn’t enough interest in those months to fill the slots assigned, they will be added back in if the player wishes to do so.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly section in the Activity Check comments are to help keep the mods aware of potential crimes oocly. The ic component is the NPC inbox that people may put crimes for Jerry to be aware of.
Sentencing will happen on TDM months as a way to incorporate plot-related nuggets in between event months. As of right now, that's how they will stay.

Character Name: Violet (Vi)

Crime: accomplice to murder

Personality: When you first meet Vi, you see a cocky, confident and incredibly sarcastic woman with absolutely no respect for authority. It stems from the fact that she grew up on the streets of the undercity, and her parents being killed by Piltover soldiers. She'd then been raised by Vander to be confident and a leader to the small group of kids that were their "family" -- Powder, Mylo, and Clagger. She kind of takes it too far though, since she has a constant need to prove herself.
Seeing so much trauma growing up has forced her to be closed off to what other people would believe to be trauma. When Jayce killed the child in their bust on one of Silco's factories, Vi is visibly upset by it but pushes past it. She points out to Jayce that there are many more children -- and adults -- that die in the Undercity every day because of decisions made by Piltover. In a case like this, her sense of justice for wanting to get back at Silco and destroy him outweighed her own personal feelings of an innocent dying. To her, what some people would call "trauma" is an every day dealing with her, as she still considers the Undercity her home.
Following that, she does have a strong sense of justice and wants to protect others. Though she detaches herself from the losses to a certain extent, it fuels her need to get back at the wrongdoer in the situation -- for most of the series, it's Silco. Every death that he's even remotely related to is another tally in her ledger to repay to him. It doesn't take her long to decide who she does and doesn't want to protect -- it was relatively quickly that she got protective over Caitlyn, as Vi deemed her a "good person" and an accessory to bring down Silco.
Vi also carries incredible grudges. Not only to the crime lord that I've already mentioned 100 times, but also to Sevika, who had betrayed Vander. When Vi is released from prison, one of the first things she does is pick a fight with the woman. On being beaten, she comes back later on in the episodes to face her again. It's not just for the grudge at that point, but a personal score to settle so that she won't feel beaten by her.
Ultimately, though, she has one worst weak spot: Powder. The little sister she'd taken care of since her parents died, she feels guilt for leaving her when the accident killed Vander. She also blames herself for Powder becoming Jinx, even though she had also been manipulated by Silco. She hides Jinx's identity from Caitlyn in an effort to protect her, and tries to protect and give her little sister second and third chances to change and to leave with her to be a family again. Despite everyone telling her that Powder had become Jinx, she had tried to protect her as she had done as a child over and over again until the end of the first season.
She's also got a quick temper. It's shown when she yells at Powder after the accident that killed Vander, and she's also easily provoked and ready for a fight by just a few words from someone. In one of the first episodes she even picks a fight with a kid on the street after they had brought their haul from Piltover -- to protect her little family but also because he'd just plain pissed her off. When Vi's temper is high, she tends to say things without thinking too hard about them, and that's something that's never changed over the years.
Underneath her hard shell, however, is a woman who does care about other people (or people she would consider "her people") deeply. Her first instinct is to hug Ekko when they meet again, and she does show doubt in situations where things don't go her way. She still even doubts, as mentioned before, her handling of Powder when they were children. There are only a few people she'd show a more sensitive side to, preferring instead to punch or fight through her feelings instead of actually reflecting on them.
Abilities: She's an accomplished fighter -- being taught to fight in a brawl from the earliest days since her parents' deaths gave her a lot of training. Other than that, that's her most special ability, is to fight.
Inventory: nothing but the clothes on her back.

Violet is the elder sister to Powder, both adopted by Vander after the death of their parents in a battle with Piltovan enforcers. She is extremely protective of Powder, often defending her clumsiness against fellow adopted sibling Mylo. A natural brute, she often settles matters with her fists than her head.

background
Discontent with the state of the undercity, Violet believes the top siders are selfish and evil. One day, Violet, Powder, Mylo, and Clagger burglarize an apartment in Piltover, which ultimately caused an explosion that forced them to abscond from the scene.
Piltover wanted to see the culprits brought to justice. As the heist leader, Violet was prepared to surrender herself, but Vander locked her in a room and took the blame instead. From a window, she could see Silco appearing abruptly, slaying enforcers and kidnapping Vander.
Violet prepares to go rescue Vander, and tells Powder to stay behind. Conflict arose during the rescue, leading to Powder setting off a monkey bomb that killed their adopted family. After Violet learns of Powder's actions, she yells at her—calling her a 'Jinx' before walking away.
Violet took a rest at a far wall, but later saw Powder approached by Silco. Before she could approach, she was suddenly arrested by Marcus.
After being released from prison, Vi searches for her sister with the help of Caitlyn, ultimately finding Jinx in her place. She doesn't appear to give up on her sister, even when reunited with Ekko and he mentions that she's not the same person. Vi refuses to acknowledge this, thinking that her sister is still in there somewhere.
Jinx gets put on the backburner though as Silco and Marcus stoke the fire of violence between Zaun and Piltover, resulting in more unrest. Vi and Caitlyn make an attempt for peace, and through Jayce and the rest of the Council, they almost succeed.
That is, until Jinx launches a bomb at the Council building itself, right as they're about to vote Zaun as an independent nation.
